Art of Contemporary Yoga Code of Ethics
This code of Ethics is based upon the following values:
Personal and Professional Integrity, Responsibility, Confidentiality as the basis of Ethical Practice and professional Competence in teaching and working for the Art of Contemporary Yoga School.
In agreeing to work with the Art of Contemporary Yoga School; one is assenting to live and work by the principles of this code and accepting accountability for:
- ETHICAL PRACTICE
- PROFESSIONAL COMPETENCE
These values are based upon the traditional ethics of Yoga as an art, a craft and a science, informed by the principles of 'Right Living' that were practised in India thousands of years ago and written down in the sacred text of the Yoga Sutra of Patanjali and adapted to a modern context. (approx. 200AD)
Patanjali's Yoga Sutra is centred on an eight-limbed path that forms the structural framework for yoga practice. In summary these are:
1. Yama - Universal Morality
2. Niyama - Personal Observances
3. Asanas - Body Postures
4. Pranayama- Breath, Consciousness and Prana
5. Pratyahara - Control of the Senses
6. Dharana - Cultivation of inner perception and awareness
7. Dhyana - Devotion, Meditation
8. Samadhi - Union with the Divine
The first two limbs are fundamental precepts of Ethical Practice that suggest how we deal with the people around us (Yamas) and our own Professional Competence and conduct (Niyamas).
